What is Breathwork?
Breath work is a technique of breathing that helps us release emotions and become more conscious of our own breath, simply put it helps us take control of our lives. We become more present and aware
Firstly, if you are practising yoga, you will know that breathing is a very important aspect of yoga, without being consciously aware of breathing or correct breathing in yoga the benefits of yoga are minimal. In other words yoga becomes yoga because of the conscious breathing! From yoga we learn and experience that prana (life force energy) is mobilized in the body through the breath. The more we breathe the more alive we are, the more energy we have and conclusively the more fulfilled lives we lead.
Secondly, you may know that from an early age we are all conditioned by society, parents etc.… to suppress our emotions, we are told how to behave what is right and wrong. So if we feel something that is “not right” to feel (need), then we suppress our emotions! What you may not know is that when this happens we alter the pattern of our breathing. The breath work sessions reverse this process allowing us to release these stored emotions in our subconscious mind (viz. a viz. our bodies).
Thirdly, the most powerful relaxation, meditation techniques and mindfulness techniques involve watching our breath. These techniques are now more commonly being prescribed for symptoms such as anxiety attacks, stress, depression and sleeping disorders.
How does one feel after a breath work session?
Typically after a breath work session you will feel lighter physically, happier, more peaceful, you will be able to breath more easily, you will basically feel lighter, as if a weight has been lifted from your chest. This occurs from the emotional release. Emotions live in the body and are a result of unmet needs, in the past, that affect us in the future. Releasing these emotions sets us free and has a direct impact on us physically and mentally.
This type of therapy is natural, (no drugs) and safe because you are in control, emotions will only be released that are ready to be released by your breathing.
When does one know that they need a breath work session?
It’s quite simple, if you wake up in the morning feeling discontent, unhappy or disturbed then you probably need a session. If you feel out of sorts and disturbed sometimes it might be due to a specific issue/event in your life or it’s also quite possible that you may not know why you feel like you do.
